‘I Spy, I Spy – A Deadly Dilemma’: A new book by Jos Kremers

Sander de Vries is a fourteen-year-old boy.

One day, he has a vision in which he witnesses a violent scene. It takes place somewhere familiar to him — his school — and one of the main people involved is someone he knows: Ruben Vrijman, a fellow student.

There seems to be no reason for Sander to tell anyone about the vision. After all, it happened only in his mind.

A year later, however, the vision suddenly becomes reality. It eventually becomes clear that every detail Sander saw has happened exactly as he envisioned it. A young woman is attacked by Ruben, stabbed several times and dies from her injuries.

Later, during a barbecue at his neighbours' house, Sander suddenly has another vision, this time involving Robbie.

But it is not Robbie as he knows him now — a child. Instead, Sander sees Robbie as an adult.

The adult Robbie is giving a speech.

The visions keep coming, gradually developing into a continuing story. Violence and conspiracies become their main ingredients and escalate to unimaginable proportions.

Eventually, the visions reveal the outbreak of a full-scale war.

It is unclear which powers are fighting each other, why they are at war or whether there is any way to prevent it. The story remains set in what might be described as the “present of the future.”

Knowing that these events will not take place for more than twenty years confronts Sander with an enormous moral dilemma.

Can Sander — or someone he trusts — do anything to prevent his visions from becoming reality?

And if so, how?
