Fact or Fiction? The World Behind QUMRAN

Qumran is a thriller set against a background of real archaeological discoveries, historical events and existing locations. Throughout the story, historical fact and fiction are deliberately intertwined.

How were the Dead Sea Scrolls really discovered? Did the Essenes live at Qumran? Does the mysterious manuscript 1Q73 actually exist? And which elements of the story were created by the author?

1947 – The Discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls

In 1947, the young Bedouin shepherd Mohammed ed-Dib discovered a cave near Qumran containing ancient pottery jars and manuscripts. According to the well-known account, he threw a stone into a cave and heard pottery breaking.

This historical event forms the starting point of QUMRAN. In the novel, however, I deliberately adapted and expanded upon the discovery. Mohammed finds a remarkable scroll that ultimately leads to the secret at the heart of the story.

Qumran and the Essenes

The ruins of Qumran lie on the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea. According to the most widely accepted theory, the settlement was inhabited in antiquity by a community identified with the Essenes. The exact relationship between Qumran and the Essenes, however, remains a subject of scholarly debate.

In QUMRAN, fiction takes this idea one step further. In the novel, a hidden community still exists in 1947, tracing its origins directly back to the ancient Essenes. There is no historical evidence that such a community survived into modern times.

FACT: Qumran existed in antiquity and has traditionally been strongly associated with the Essenes.

The Mysterious Manuscript 1Q73

In the scholarly designation of the Dead Sea Scrolls, 1Q refers to Cave 1 at Qumran. The manuscripts found in this cave were assigned individual numbers. The established numbering runs up to 1Q72.

This is where the fiction of QUMRAN begins. Suppose another manuscript from Cave 1 had existed — a text that was never officially made known. Its next number could have been 1Q73.

In the novel, 1Q73 is the key to a discovery with far-reaching consequences. The manuscript itself is fictional, but its name deliberately follows the existing scholarly numbering system.

From Qumran to Groningen

The Dead Sea Scrolls have not only led to important scholarly research in Israel. The University of Groningen also has a special connection with Qumran. In 1961, Professor Adam S. van der Woude founded the Qumran Institute there, dedicated to research into the Dead Sea Scrolls and early Judaism.

In QUMRAN, the main character Roger Meers is associated with this institute. Roger himself is fictional, but the academic environment in which he works is real.

FACT: The Qumran Institute at the University of Groningen exists and was founded in 1961 by Adam S. van der Woude.

FICTION: Roger Meers, his work and his involvement in the mystery surrounding 1Q73.

The Seven Scrolls from Cave 1

During the first discoveries in Cave 1 at Qumran, seven famous manuscripts were eventually found. These seven scrolls should not be confused with seven individual jars. The cave contained several pottery jars, some of which were empty.

After their discovery, the original scrolls passed through various hands, including dealers and scholars. Eventually, all seven came to the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, where the famous Dead Sea Scrolls are preserved in the Shrine of the Book.

In QUMRAN, I adapted parts of this history to make room for the mystery surrounding an unknown manuscript.

It is precisely on the boundary between historical reality and imagination that QUMRAN begins. Real places, archaeological discoveries and scholarly facts provide the setting for a story in which a single unknown manuscript could cast history in an entirely different light.
